New Zealand-born tenor Zachary McCulloch is known for his "Italianate warmth" and a light-lyric tenor voice that brings both richness and expressive color to his performances. With experience across Oceania, Europe, and North America, Zachary is a versatile artist equally at home in operatic and concert repertoire.
Zachary has had the pleasure of performing with companies and festivals including the Opéra National du Capitole de Toulouse, Festival della Valle d'Itria, Landestheater Linz, Opera Australia, and Victorian Opera. Audiences and critics alike appreciate his dynamic portrayals of roles like Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Flavio (Norma), Oronte (Alcina), Ferrando (Così fan tutte), and Nadir (Les Pêcheurs de Perles). Upcoming roles include Gulatiero in Il Pirata, the 4th Jew in Salome, Ein Lehrbube in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at Deutsche Oper Berlin, and the Third SS Officer in Die Passagierin.
Alongside his operatic roles, Zachary enjoys an active concert career, with a repertoire that includes Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, Haydn’s Große Orgelsolomesse, and Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël. He has been fortunate to collaborate with respected conductors and directors, such as Fabio Luisi, Victorien Vanhoosten, Francesco Lanzillotta, Emmanuel Plasson, Nicola Raab, Rita Cosentino, and François Racine, each bringing new perspectives and depth to his artistry.
Zachary’s training has been shaped by experiences in top development programs, including the Accademia di Bel Canto “Rodolfo Celletti” in Italy and the ICAV Course in Montreal, where he debuted as Rodolfo in La Bohème. He has also been a studio artist with the State Opera of South Australia and worked with the Australian Contemporary Opera Company. A graduate of Melbourne University, Zachary was recently recognized as a finalist in the Vincero Competition in Verona.

Looking ahead, Zachary is excited to return to Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse and continue his journey in Europe, expanding his repertoire and connecting with audiences worldwide.
